To a God Unknown (1962) — John Steinbeck
Corgi Books paperback
Offered by Crappy Old Books
Steinbeck’s strange, beautiful early novel follows Joseph Wayne, a settler in a raw California valley whose fierce love for the land borders on the sacred. As seasons turn to drought, belief, luck, and sacrifice tangle: a family fractures, crops wither, and Joseph’s private worship collides with a community’s fear. Pagan hush, Biblical thunder—this is Steinbeck testing the edges of faith, nature, and the price of belonging.
Why you’ll like it:
-
Lush, myth-tinged California writing from a Nobel great
-
Big themes (land, faith, fate) in a taut, haunting story
-
Perfect companion to East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath for completists
Edition notes:
Corgi 1962 mass-market paperback. Expect the honest patina of a well-traveled book—light creases, toned pages, maybe a name inside—exact condition confirmed at checkout.
Crappy Old Books: rescuing the worthy, the weathered, and the wonderfully weird.
I have repaired the inner hinges on both the front and back covers with paper-hinges as the covers were near to coming away. Its a subtle, yet strong repair done sympathetically resutling in the book being quite readable in any environment. Whilst its a 1962 publication, it looks much older and rarer, and is a true delight to hold.
Fairly good condition in general.
